THE SHORT ANSWER
Most studies lasting more than six months require a study permit. Exceptions exist, and your program and circumstances matter.
What about a course lasting six months or less?
A short course may not require a study permit if it is not part of a longer program and can be completed within your authorized stay. Check the official exceptions before relying on this.
Is a study permit a visa?
No. A study permit and an entry document serve different purposes. IRCC explains which visa or eTA accompanies an approved application, depending on the applicant’s travel document.
What should I check before choosing a school?
Confirm the school’s designated learning institution status and the requirements for your intended program. If working after graduation matters to you, check PGWP eligibility separately before committing to tuition.
